How to German Smear your Brick!

I’m so excited to share with you some pictures from @kristinbuckner on instagram who sent me some great pictures of how she “German Smeared” her brick.

Here is how she did it:

  1.  She took a basic white mortar (she used Versabond white mortar) and mixed to a spreadable consistency.  She spread it on using a sponge (or check out my other post for another method and you can use which one works best for you: How to German Smear).  She then waited until it was mostly dry and used  burlap and steel wool to scrape some of the mortar off to get the look she wanted.

Here is her before picture of the brick before the German Smear:

She said that she used the burlap to take a lot of it off because she wanted a lot of the brick showing.  That’s what I love about German Smear.  If you have really ugly brick, you can cover most of it up or leave more exposed.  Notice how the white mortar stayed between the bricks and covered up the gray mortar, so for all you people out there who were wondering if you could do this with ugly mortar the answer is YES!  White mortar looks so much better than gray.

Here’s a video of someone using the same technique:

  1. I am very interested in using versabond on my exterior brick. I called the manufacturer’s technical department and they said I was entering into uncharted waters. To anyone out there that has used this method, how is the bond holding up? Does it need maintaining? Any discoloration?

    • The versa bond is not mortar. It is a thinset for setting tile. Personally, I would opt for a white mortar rather than thinset.

  3. We have a small complex with old brick that is letting rainwater in. Would a heavy German Wash seal the brick and stop leaking?

    • Well I’m definitely not a brick expert, but I’ve seen a lot of brick repairs involving removing old crumbling mortar and redoing it. If that’s what needs to be done to yours, then if you like the German Smear look, they can just smear it all over the brick too. Some brick needs to be sealed with a water sealer and some need both done. So I definitely see how the German Smear can be combined with what you already have to do to seal your brick and make it look better in the process. I’d love to hear what you find out from some brick experts, and if mortar smeared all over the brick and mortar is enough to seal water out!
