What to think about before choosing your outdoor staircase

Are you planning on building an outdoor staircase on your exterior deck or maybe you want to connect an upper level to your garden or yard?  There are a lot of possibilities and options you can take into consideration.  Depending on your budget, you could go from solid rock stairs or simple wood stairs to an easy to assemble kit.  To help you make the right choice, here are some useful tips:

The most popular material used for an external staircase is without any doubt wood because it works for most environments.  In this case, it is important to find a high-quality wood that can handle all weather conditions without any problems.  Keep in mind, that depending on the kind of wood you are buying, it will need a certain amount of maintenance especially if it is treated lumber.  Rock or stone is actually more durable than wood but often more expensive.  However, stone steps require only occasional washing with a high-pressure sprayer. Metal could be a good compromise to take into consideration as it is cheaper and requires less maintenance.  Of course, you have to base your decision on the design of your house too.

Another element to keep in mind is the design of the railing:  Spiral or straight rods, thick or thin rods.  Stair railings, for example, can be very simple but give an elegant design to your staircase.  You can also mix materials for the treads and hand railings to create very interesting and personal railings.

When your staircase is finished add some decoration in order to make it even more beautiful.  The easiest way to personalize your work will be to paint the staircase a color that will suit your exterior design.  Make sure to use a high quality paint to be sure that the paint last a long time.  If it’s wood stairs, don’t use paint, you want to use stain.  Paint will chip and flake and cause lots of headaches.  To give a peaceful atmosphere, add some plants and a few exterior lights.  They will warm up your staircase and the overall garden.  There are many ways to create your own exterior staircase by combining different materials, and by using different colors and accessories.
